SEASIDE, Calif. – Five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning proved to be the Montana State University Billings softball team's undoing Friday afternoon as the Yellowjackets dropped their NCAA Division II West Regional opener with site-host California State University Monterey Bay 12-4 after opening up a 4-1 lead.
“Our team came out really strong today,” said head coach
Lisa Allen. “(Our team) had great energy and did a good job of jumping on (CSUMB's) pitcher early. Unfortunately, in the fourth inning, we started to coast as a team and had some miscues on defense. Even though we lost I believe that this is a good learning experience for our team and hope that tomorrow they will come out to play all 7 innings.”
Since the tournament is double-elimination, MSUB (32-17) will play sixth-seeded University of California, San Diego (35-20) tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. Pacific time for the opportunity to stay alive while nationally-seventh-ranked and second-seeded CSUMB (46-12) will take on third-seeded Dixie State University (37-11) in Saturday's first game at 11:00 a.m.
The winner of the game between MSUB and UC San Diego will go on to play the loser of the game between CSU Monterey Bay and Dixie State in a 4:00 p.m. game.
As the visiting team in Friday's second game, MSUB was able to ease out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first with both
Bobbie Lee and
Meg Harasymczuk scoring off a single by
Jenna VanEykeren before the Otters got one run back in the bottom of the inning.
Rose Harrington scored MSUB's final two runs of the game in the third and fourth innings giving the 'Jackets a 4-1 lead, but CSUMB would battle back in the fifth stanza, scoring five runs before putting the game away with another six runs in the sixth.
Harrington led the way for MSUB at the plate with a 2-2 outing that included scoring the two runs while Harasymczuk went 2-3 with an RBI and one run scored.
Angelina Orozco and Cori Reinhardt both went 3-4 at the dish. Orozco scored two runs and batted another two in while Reinhardt knocked in three and scored one herself.
Kasie Conder pitched the first five innings for MSUB and was saddled with the loss to fall to 7-4.
Kylie Linnane (13-3) came in to pitch the final two innings for the Otters to earn the win after Reinhardt started the game.
