Billings, Mont. – After a big victory the previous day before, the Montana State Billings women's soccer team showed no signs of a letdown against Northern State University. In their second and final contest of the Tenth Annual MSU Billings Cup, head coach
Wojtek Krakowiak had his team focused on the task at hand and the Yellowjackets executed efficiently. The victory over Northern State marks the third consecutive year MSUB has won the MSUB Cup.
The Yellowjackets controlled the flow of the game from the start. MSUB applied constant offensive pressure on the Wolves and kept the ball on the opponent's side of the field for the majority of the first half. Within the first 20 minutes of the contest the Jackets took six shots, with five being on the goal. Senior forward
Jaucelyn Richter led the charge with all four of her shots being on target while junior forward
Heidi Greenback fired the other shot on goal.
Northern State was able to get their offense going in the 26
th minute of the half when Rachel Goslinga took a shot of goal. This attempt however was denied by freshman goal keeper
Aiko Johnson, who made her second consecutive start on the year. While senior defender
Courtney Harvey and the Jacket backline were not strongly tested on the day, their ability to quickly deny the opposition's attack provided MSUB to stay in rhythm on offense.
In the 40
th minute of the half senior defender
Jennifer Larsen scored a header off of an
Alisa Sagdahl assist, giving the Jackets the 1-0 lead. The goal marks Larsen's first on the year and 17
th in her career. At the end of the half MSUB had the advantage in shots 14-4 and shots on goal 12-3.
The Yellowjackets started the second half similar to the first, and continued to apply offensive pressure on the Wolves defense. In the 47
th minute of the contest, Larsen scored her second goal on the day when she bent a shot pass the left side of the goal keeper, landing in the back left corner of the net.
With a 2-0 advantage and a commanding control of the game, coach Krakowiak made several substitutions to allow younger players to gain valuable game experience. Sophomore
Jennifer Johnson made an impact on the game very shortly after she entered the contest. Johnson took her first shot on goal in the 73
rd minute, then tallied an assist in the 76
th minute on a Sagdahl goal. Sagdahl scored her first career goal on a 20 yard shot over top of the goal keepers out stretched arms.
The Yellowjackets defeated the Wolves 3-0 and Johnson received her second consecutive shutout. MSUB lead in every offensive category taking 23 shots, 16 shots on goal and seven corner kicks.
“It's great to start the season 2-0 and we are happy with winning the MSUB Cup,” said Krakowiak. “We faced two tough opponents and we were tested in each game. Northern State is a good team and they played well today. I am happy with our team's effort and we look forward to improving each day we step on the field.”
The MSUB Cup will conclude with the Colorado School of Mines facing off against Northern State University Sunday, Sept. 1 at 1:00 p.m.
