Billings, Mont. – The Montana State Billings men's soccer team is off to a great start this fall. In their second game on the Hawaiian road trip, they matched up against the Hawaii Pacific University Sea Warriors. In a true team effort the Yellowjackets defeated the Sea Warriors 3-2, marking the first time the team has started 2-0 since 2009.
Saturday's matchup was a very physical bout, both teams accounted for 14 fouls within the first 20 minutes of play. Hawaii Pacific attacked first taking a shot on goal in the 3
rd minute of the first half. MSUB's defense held up, with sophomore goal keeper
Eoin Hurley making a save on the play. Freshman defender
Sam Butterworth and the Yellowjackets backline gave great support, effectively defending two corner kicks in the 3
rd and 5
th minute of the contest.
The Yellowjackets
Thomas Chameraud took the team's first shot that went high over the goal in the 15
th minute. MSUB's next offensive attack would come off a penalty kick in the 29
th minute. Hawaii Pacific mad the initial save off Chameraud's penalty kick, but
Legofi Crawford gave a beautiful assist off the deflection and Chameraud scored his first goal (30:27) of the season off a header.
With MSUB now having the 1-0 advantage, the Sea Warriors quickly fired back scoring the game tying goal off of an Alejandro Porras shot in the 36
th minute. The Jackets and Hawaii Pacific entered the break locked at 1-1.
In the second half the Yellowjackets picked up the tempo and quickly attacked the Sea Warriors defense. Chameraud and
Chad Ward both fired shots in the 53
rd minute. Chameraud's attempt went high while Ward's shot hit the crossbar.
Crawford subbed into the contest in the 54
th minute and had an immediate effect on the game. He put the Jackets up 2-1, with a successful completion of the header attempt off the Chameraud assist in the 60
th minute. Still in rhythm, the Chameraud to Crawford connection struck again in the 62
nd minute. Chameraud gave a great pass to Crawford and he nailed a shot in the right side of the net, marking his third goal on the year.
Down 3-1, Hawaii Pacific countered quickly scoring a goal in the 69
th minute to bring the score to 3-2. The Sea Warriors slight momentum would be met by a stout Yellowjacket defense and despite taking two more shots on goal, Hawaii Pacific would not be able to tie the contest and MSUB effectively captured their second win of the 2012 season.
“We played very well today,” stated eight year head coach Dan McNally. “Every player did their job and it was a real team effort to get the win.”
MSUB finished the game taking 13 shots and seven shots on goal. Hurley had six saves on the day. The Yellowjackets next game will be against the University of Hawaii Hilo on Tuesday, Sept. 4 12:00 p.m. (Hawaiian Time).
