Men’s Soccer: Sea Lions Claw Jackets in Double OT

Box Score

San Diego, Cali. – Montana State Billings men's soccer team struggles continue as they fall 2-1 in the 105th minute of play to Point Loma Nazarene University Saturday (Sept. 14) afternoon. The Yellowjackets conclude their Californian road trip with a 0-3-1 mark.

In an evenly matched battle, the Sea Lions outlasted the Jackets and escaped with the one goal victory. Saturday's match saw its fair share of offense with 25 total shots. Point Loma was more efficient with their opportunities landing nine of their 14 shots on goal compared to MSUB's four shots on target out of 11 attempts.

Just as it seemed Point Loma and the Jackets would go into halftime scoreless, Daniel Ten Bosch scored at 35:42 to give the Sea Lions the 1-0 lead. Ricardo Martinez and Jonathan Tiggs were credited with the assist. Kyle Emerick tried to respond before the half for MSU Billings, but his shot attempt was saved by Point Loma's Carter Phillips (41:13).

The Sea Lions held the 1-0 advantage and outshot the Yellowjackets 6-5.

Point Loma continued to apply offensive pressure in the second half, taking three shots within the first 12 minutes. Despite being outshot early, MSUB was more efficient with their attempts and deadlocked the score in the 62nd minute. Sam Butterworth sent home a long shot to bring the score to 1-1. Jesper Fries was credited with the assist.

The defense tightened in the later minutes of the half, seeing less offense. MSU Billings had one last attempt to break the tie as Aodhan Brownlee's shot at 81:40 was turned away by Phillips.

Point Loma and the Yellowjackets ended regulation all locked up at 1-1.

With both teams battling in extra minutes, a costly foul by MSUB put the opposition in a pivotal position to score. Receiving a free kick from the Jackets foul, Tyler Allen scored the game winning goal at 105:07 to lift the Sea Lions over MSUB.

Point Loma improves to 2-2-0 on the season while the Yellowjackets fall to 0-3-1. Eoin Hurley started his fourth consecutive game at goalkeeper and tallied a game high seven saves in the match. Phillips finished the contest with three saves for the Sea Lions en route to his second victory of the season.

MSUB will need to regroup quickly as they start their Great Northwest Athletic Conference schedule on Sept. 19, hosting the defending conference champion and No. 2 nationally ranked Simon Fraser Clan.
