Shuman named GNAC Player of the Week after 3 goals, 1 assist

PORTLAND, Ore. – Scoring the first goal of the game and providing the assist on the game-winner in a come-from-behind 3-2 win over Northwest Nazarene on Saturday, Montana State University Billings women's soccer senior Chelsea Shuman has been named Great Northwest Athletic Conference co-offensive Player of the Week announced by the conference office Monday.

"I am very happy for Chelsea to win the award this week," said MSUB head coach Wojtek Krakowiak. "She has been a huge part of the success of this program over the past four seasons here. She has been a good leader for us this year and fully deserves winning GNAC offensive Player of the Week."

Shuman scored three total goals in the Yellowjackets' two games, finding the net twice in a 3-0 win over Simon Fraser on Thursday.

With its backs against the wall down 2-0 on Saturday in the 75th minute against Northwest Nazarene, MSUB received a goal from Shuman to keep the team alive. After an equalizer by Katlyn Lokay in the 84th minute, Shuman passed the ball to Lokay in the 105th for the assist on the game-winning goal.

In the game against NNU, Shuman took a team-high six shots, placing five of them on frame. Shuman has scored four goals on the season, and her 43 shots are the second-most on the team. She has played in all 16 contests, starting 15, and she has two assists for a total of 10 points so far.

Shuman's effort helped MSUB extend its winning streak to five games, giving the team momentum heading into this week's GNAC Championships at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila, Wash. MSUB will face Seattle Pacific on Thursday with a 5 p.m. Mountain time kickoff scheduled for the first-round game.

The award was the second for Shuman in her career, as she previously earned the honor for the week of Aug. 27 – Sept. 2 during the 2012 season as a sophomore.

MSUB senior defender Jennifer Johnson received honorable mention defensive Player of the Week notoriety, as she helped MSUB to its seventh shutout of the season in the 3-0 win over SFU. Johnson has played every minute of the season so far as an outside back.
