Goggins, Miller Athletes of the Year, Softball Team of the Year at 3rd annual Buzzies

MSUB SPORTS – Taking home the top honors at the 2015 Buzzie Awards presented by the Montana State University Billings department of intercollegiate athletics were Female and Male Student-Athletes of the Year Kayleen Goggins and Brody Miller who headlined a wide ranging cast of award recipients throughout the evening at Petro Theater on the MSUB campus.

Goggins, a senior on the MSUB women's basketball team who averaged 20 points per game this season, was named to multiple All-America teams and completed her career as a Yellowjacket among the best in program history.

Miller is the reigning Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year, and last season became the first All-American in MSUB history. This season he is currently leading the conference in home runs with 12 as he and the Yellowjackets fight for a return to the conference tournament.

The MSUB softball team was selected as the 2014-15 Team of the Year, as the Yellowjackets recently clinched a berth in the GNAC Championships and are headed to Yakima, Wash., next weekend to make a run at earning an NCAA Regional Playoff Berth.

Taking home Coach of the Year honors was baseball head coach Rob Bishop, who has piloted the Yellowjackets into second place in the GNAC standings as MSUB is just percentage points out of first place in the conference. Bishop also claimed his 500th career coaching victory this season, his fifth at MSUB after a decade as the head coach at Miles Community College.

Among other major award winners were Annie DePuydt of the women's basketball team, who was named the scholar athlete of the year. When DePuydt graduates this spring, she will be the only student at the university to carry a perfect 4.00 grade point average and will receive summa cum laude honors.

The Freshman of the Year award was presented to women's golfer Sammy Walter, who led the team in scoring average and helped the Yellowjackets to a repeat of second place at the GNAC Championships this spring.

Earning Newcomer of the Year was sophomore Kari Kastelic, who played every single minute on the defensive unit of the Yellowjacket women's soccer team which allowed just 12 goals and advanced to the GNAC Championships last fall.

Taking home Breakout Player of the Year honors was sophomore right fielder Myles Berkram who is batting .360 as the leadoff hitter in MSUB's lineup after hitting just .245 in a reserve role as a freshman a season ago.

The evening kicked off with the special presentation of a new award this year, as six-year-old Sebastien Easton helped MSUB director of athletics Krista Montague present the Yellowjacket Award for community service and involvement to the MSUB men's soccer team.

Easton, who is battling cancer, was adopted by the Yellowjackets in the fall through the TEAM IMPACT program and has been a close member of the MSUB family ever since. The men's soccer team was presented with the award for its outstanding effort in becoming a crucial part of Sebastien's life and helping him in the challenging battle he is courageously fighting.

The Yellowjackets also honored the 2014-15 Fan of the Year, which was presented to Cheryl Nook, wife of MSUB chancellor Dr. Mark Nook for her enthusiastic support throughout the seasons at all sporting events.

Rob Kovatch, the public address announcer for Yellowjacket Athletics, served as the emcee for the evening's events.
