ST. GEORGE, Utah – For the west region-leading third time this season, a Montana State University Billings baseball student-athlete has been selected as the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Association West Region Player of the Week, as Yellowjacket senior
Trevor Nix received the honor announced Tuesday.
Â
Nix went 7-for-11 at the plate for the Yellowjackets in their 3-1 series victory over Northwest Nazarene last week, helping MSUB retain its position in first place in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference standings.
Â
In a record-tying 16-0 victory in Game 3, Nix went 5-for-6 with six RBIs and came a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Needing the toughest leg to complete the feat, he held up at second base in the eighth inning after a line drive into the gap in left center as the lead runner was stopped at third in front of him.
Â
Nix also hit his third home run of the season in the game, had two doubles, and scored twice. Nix scored five runs in the series, stole a base, and had a sacrifice fly while slugging 1.091, batting .636 and reaching base at .615.
Â
Nix joined fellow senior
Brody Miller and junior
Luke Reinschmidt, who each also earned the NCBWA regional honor earlier this season. Reinschmidt went on to earn NCBWA National Player of the Week in February, after he hit four home runs in eight games.
Â
Nix is now eligible to receive the National Player of the Week honor, which will be voted on and announced on Wednesday. No other school in the west region has received more Player of the Week awards than the Yellowjackets' three this season.
Â
Nix was picked as the GNAC Player of the Week on Monday, the seventh time this season the Yellowjackets have received the weekly honor from the conference.
