PORTLAND, Ore. – After finishing as the top golfer for the Montana State University Billings women's golf team in each of the Yellowjackets' tournaments last week, freshman Sammy Walter has been selected as the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Golfer of the Week announced by the conference office Monday.
 
"This is a very exciting moment for Sammy as she has worked hard this offseason and is hitting the ball well right now," said MSUB head coach Shawn O'Brien. "Being a true freshman and playing very solid for us right now is a great accomplishment. Sammy is playing really consistent and has a lot of confidence."
 
Walter placed third at MSUB's St. Vincent Healthcare Yellowjacket Spring Invitational, shooting a two-round total of 154 (78-76). Walter improved two strokes between rounds, and her effort helped MSUB run away with the team title, 45 strokes ahead of second-place Rocky Mountain College. Walter had 18 pars and five birdies in the tournament.
 
Facing a quick turnaround, Walter was again the top finisher for the Yellowjackets at the Western New Mexico Invitational, which ran Friday and Saturday at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Ariz. Walter matched her total from earlier in the week with another 154 (76-78), and finished in the top-20 in a field of more than 100 players in a tie for 19th place. Walter had 16 pars and six birdies in the tournament.
 
On the season Walter is averaging 81.2 strokes per round which leads the Yellowjackets.
 
MSUB is next in action at the GNAC Championships, which are set to run April 20-21 at the Coeur d'Alene Resort in Idaho.
