Warren’s golden goal lifts MSUB women to 2-1, OT win over SFU Thursday

BILLINGS, Mont. – Hayley Warren curled the game-winning goal into the side netting from the top of the box in the 98th minute on Thursday, lifting the Montana State University Billings women's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win over Great Northwest Athletic Conference foe Simon Fraser University at Yellowjacket Field.

The goal was the third of the season for Warren, and gave the 'Jackets their second 2-1, overtime win over the Clan of the season. The victory lifted MSUB's record to 4-9-3 overall and 4-5-2 in GNAC play. "We came out ready to play, and the first 25 minutes in the first half we came out really strong up front," said MSUB head coach Wojtek Krakowiak. "That was a really good individual effort for Hayley. We talk about playing quick, and Kalin did a great job with the throw-in. Hayley had an unbelievable turn, good composure and a nice finish."

With time winding down in the first overtime period, freshman Kalin Sandow scooped up a ball out of bounds and quickly threw it in to Warren on the right side of the field. The senior shook off her defender, and cut a dipping shot towards the back post that ended the match as it pierced the side of the net. "At that point, I'm just looking to play the ball quickly, and I knew that would give us more chances," Sandow said. "Hayley called for the ball early, and I knew I was just going to get it to her."

Bailey Griglio scored her first goal of the year and fourth of her career in the 12th minute, giving MSUB an early lead. The Clan (8-6-1, 6-5 GNAC) countered with a goal by Carli Grosso just before halftime, as the score line read 1-1 at the break.

Each of the first two goals came on a set piece, with the Yellowjackets striking after Jordan Devoto drew a foul on the right side of the field. Dana Lubieniecki sent in a cross, and Kari Kastelic touched the ball down to Griglio for a tap-in finish from five yards away. "Devoto did well and won the free kick for us, and Dana played a great ball in," Griglio said. "Kari played the ball to my feet and I was wide open, so I just finished it to the far post."

"That was good composure by Bailey, and credit her for being in the right place and firing the ball into the goal," Krakowiak said.

MSUB goalkeeper Lili Delgadillo stepped forward to grab a cross by SFU's Sophie D'Souza with seven minutes to go before the break, preventing an oncoming Devon Kollmyer from a chance at a shot. The sophomore finished with three saves in the match for MSUB.

The Clan's lone goal came in the 43rd minute, when Grosso perfectly redirected a corner-kick cross from Kollmyer into the left corner of the net with her head.

In its sixth overtime match of the year, MSUB defended well for the majority of the game. Center backs Amanda Hemmen and Kastelic both played the full 97 minutes, and limited SFU to just four shots on goal in 16 total attempts. Kylee Wolfe, Courteney Shovlin, and Sandow combined on the outside defensively as well.

"Everyone in the back had a really good game, and I was impressed that we kept them to four shots on goal," Krakowiak said. "I'm extremely proud of the team for not giving up and playing awesome."

Bailey Griglio scored her first goal of the season and the fourth of her career on Thursday against SFU.

Devoto made a key backtracking run early on in the second half, as she helped cover behind Sandow and knock away a dangerous cross from the corner before it got to the box. The Clan had a chance to take the lead with seven minutes to go in regulation, but a left-footed shot by Olivia Aguiar off of a set-piece pass from Teagan Sorokan rolled wide of the goal post.

Warren led the Yellowjackets with four shots, and Jessica Spang had three including one on target. MSUB won despite being out-shot 16-10 in the match, and the 'Jackets put five of their attempts on target. Claire Tevaseu put in 92 solid minutes at holding midfielder for the 'Jackets, and played a big part in the strong defensive effort as well.

Emma Pringle had a team-high four shots for SFU, and Katelyn Erhardsen and Aguiar had three apiece for the visitors.

THE BUZZ: Warren was picked as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game…it was the team's second golden goal of the year, after Wolfe ended the match at SFU in similar fashion in the first overtime period…the goal was the third of the season for Warren…MSUB is now 11-4 all-time against the Clan…the assist was the first of Sandow's career…Kastelic's assist was her third of the season.
