BURNABY, B.C. –
Kylee Wolfe finished a golden goal on a pass from
Dana Lubieniecki in overtime on Saturday, as the Montana State University Billings women's soccer team overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit and defeated Simon Fraser University 2-1 in a Great Northwest Athletic Conference match at Terry Fox Field.
MSUB snapped a two-game losing skid with the victory, receiving its first golden goal of the year in its fourth overtime match. The 'Jackets improved to 3-6-2 overall and edged their conference record above .500 at 3-2-1. The Clan fell to 5-4-1 with the loss, and are now an even 3-3 in GNAC play.
"The team played amazing today, and we dug deep and got the win," said MSUB head coach
Wojtek Krakowiak. "Dana was very dangerous in the final third and executed well offensively. I am proud of the team for sticking together and continuing to fight."
Emma Pringle gave the Clan a 1-0 advantage 10 minutes into the match, finishing a shot from the top of the box inside the left post. Her strike came after a missed clearance out of the box by the
Dana Lubieniecki had a goal and an assist in a single game for the first time in her career.
Yellowjackets' defense, as she capitalized on a scoring chance early in the match.
Despite being out-shot 13-3 in the opening period, all three of the Yellowjackets' attempts toward goal were on target. The theme of efficiency carried through to the second half for MSUB, as it finished the game placing 5 of 8 attempts on frame.
The 'Jackets made a statement coming out of the halftime break, as Lubieniecki scored her team-leading fourth goal of the year less than five minutes into the second. Delgadillo meanwhile helped keep the team together defensively, making several key saves moving through the middle of the second half. "Lili made some incredible saves today and really kept us in the game," Krakowiak said.
MSUB nearly pushed in front with 21 minutes to play, after a corner kick by Lubieniecki was redirected off of the crossbar from close range. The 'Jackets held a slight edge in possession over the final quarter of the match, as both teams battled through a steady rainfall that commenced before kickoff.
Ending the match just five minutes into the overtime period, Wolfe's first goal of the season and her MSUB career spurred the team into a celebration on the field. The play started with
Jordan Devoto in the midfield, dribbling diagonally and passing the ball to Lubieniecki. The senior touched a soft pass through to Wolfe, who finished inside the far post.
"Hayley and Kylee were amazing today, holding the ball and helping us win challenges," Krakowiak said crediting forward
Hayley Warren with MSUB's strong attack in the second half. "They worked extremely hard and executed the little things. That created a lot of chances for us."
Delgadillo finished the match with a career-high nine saves, while SFU's Priya Sandhu recorded three in net. Pringle led the home team with five shots, and Olivia Aguiar added four as SFU finished the match with 24 attempts. The 'Jackets won three corner kicks in the match, compared with two for SFU, and all of them came in the second half.
Claire Tevaseu joined Lubieniecki in playing all 95 minutes in the midfield for the 'Jackets. Defensively,
Kari Kastelic,
Amanda Hemmen, and
Courteney Shovlin all played the entire match, and
Kalin Sandow played 69 strong minutes on the back line as well.
THE BUZZ: Lubieniecki was picked as the St. Vincent Healthcare Player of the Game…it was MSUB's second come-from-behind win of the season, as the 'Jackets also achieved the feat in a 2-1 win at NNU…it was Lubieniecki's first career game with a goal and an assist.
COMING UP: The Yellowjackets return home next week, to take on Seattle Pacific University on Oct. 13 and Central Washington University on Oct. 15. Thursday's match against the Falcons kicks off at 12:30 p.m., while Saturday's contest against the Wildcats starts at 1 p.m. on MSUB Kicks Cancer Day.
