RAPID CITY, S.D. – Three new MSUB outdoor track and field records were broken at the Bauer Invitational on Saturday at O'Harra Stadium on the campus of South Dakota School of Mines.
Senior
Della Lyle shattered the MSUB women's steeplechase record by over 47 seconds as she crossed the finish line in first place in a time of 11:12.14. The native of Buffalo, Wyo., broke the record set last season by
Melanie Bock of 11:59.81. Lyle's time is a Great Northwest Athletic Conference automatic qualifying time and the third-best time in the conference this season.
Lyle came away with two titles at the meet, also winning the women's 5,000 meters in 19:07.46
Freshman
Josey Smiedala broke the MSUB record in the women's 400 meters with a time of 59.29, lowering the record of 59.51 from Ericka Halle in 2010. Smiedala placed fourth in the 400 meters and eighth in the 800 meters in 27.67.
Landon Polkow's time of 54.52 in the 400 meter hurdles broke his brother Lewis Polkow's record of 55.71 from 2013. Landon won the event by almost three seconds and his time places him at second in the GNAC this season.
"We had another really great meet on Saturday," MSUB head coach
Dave Coppock said. "Della shattered the record in the women's steeple, Landon broke his bother's record, and Josey set a new record in the 400 meters. Everyone is improving their times and have been working hard every week."
Austin Lindquist finished second in the men's 110 meter hurdles in 15.49.
Senior
Blair Street finished second in the women's 100 meters in 12.97. In the men's sprints, freshman
Kaelen Shay placed second in the men's 100 meters in 11.24 and
Cameron Stanek was fifth in 11.52. Shay was also sixth in the 200 meters in 23.09 and Stanek seventh in 23.10.
Nate Vanderby finished fourth in the men's 400 meters in 50.46.
Garrett Love was the runner-up in the men's 5,000 meters in 16:10.37 with freshman
Ivan Colmenero in third at 16:32.08.
Senior
Robert Peterson placed second in the men's 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:43.18.
Jorey Egeland finished fourth in 9:57.32.
Shaniah Schwend and
Janessa Williams each won an event. Schwend won the women's long jump in 5.10 meters and Williams won the women's triple jump with a distance of 10.97 meters. Schwend placed fifth in the triple jump in 10.58 and Williams was fourth in the 100 meter hurdles in 16:03.
Senior
Brielle Davis placed fifth in the women's steeplechase in 13:13.54.
The women's 4x100 relay was second at the meet in 50.38. The men's team finished the 4x100 relay in 43.69.
"The team really came through against some tough Division II competition," Coppock continued. "Our men's relay team had a really good race at the end of the day as well. Everyone was hot and tired and they stepped-up and finished strong which was great to see."
THE BUZZ: The MSUB track and field team has broken at least one school record in every outdoor meet this season…Lyle, named Saturday's St. Vincent Healthcare Athlete of the Meet, is a transfer this year from Redlands University and was named the GNAC Female Newcomer of the Year at the indoor championships.
UP NEXT: MSU Billings will host its third annual Yellowjacket Battlin' Bears Open on Thursday, Apr. 14 in Laurel, Mont., beginning at 1 p.m.
"We are really looking forward to having a home meet next week," Coppock said. "I know the team is excited to be home and also to be able to compete in front of their family and friends."
