Cox earns second GNAC honor after stellar week on mound, at plate

PORTLAND, Ore. – Adam Cox earned two saves and a victory with six strikeouts in five innings pitched, and batted .474 with six RBIs, a home run, and six runs scored, helping the Montana State University Billings baseball team to a 4-1 series win over Western Oregon University and winning his second Great Northwest Athletic Conference Player of the Week award of the season announced Monday.

"Adam was terrific at the plate and on the mound for us," said MSUB head coach Rob Bishop. "He was a big part of our team's success this week."

Cox almost singlehandedly lifted the 'Jackets to victory on Wednesday, as he homered, doubled, and drove in four runs at the plate, and pitched the final 1 1/3 innings on the mound in a tight, 4-3 series-opening win over the Wolves.

Overall in MSUB's five games last week, Cox reached base at a clip of .545 and slugged .737. His big week on the mound came after throwing 3 1/3 innings in relief against Concordia the previous Sunday, helping the 'Jackets to a critical win in a 3-1 series victory over the Cavaliers. In total, Cox threw 8 1/3 innings in four appearances – all victories for the 'Jackets over the course of eight days.

With his two saves last week, Cox broke the MSUB career record of seven as he now has nine in his two seasons with the 'Jackets.

Cox is now batting .333 on the season with six home runs, 11 doubles, and 27 runs scored. He is third in the GNAC in RBIs with 34, fourth in slugging percentage at .569, fifth in on-base percentage at .417, and is tied for third in home runs.

On the mound, Cox holds a 3.51 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings pitched in relief. He is 5-1 in 15 appearances, and ranks third in the GNAC with five saves. His opponents' batting average of .209 ranks second in the conference as well.

Cox earned GNAC Player of the Week honors for March 14-20, as he went 6-for-12 with six extra-base hits including three doubles, a triple, and two home runs. This is the fifth overall player of the week honor for MSUB this season, and second of Cox's career.

After going 7-2 on a grueling, 9-game road trip in eight days, the 'Jackets return home this weekend to close the regular season with four games against Saint Martin's University. MSUB is not only still in the hunt for a GNAC tournament berth, but also has a chance to win a second-straight regular season title and host the championships at Dehler Park.
