PORTLAND, Ore. – Helping slug Montana State University Billings to its fourth consecutive Great Northwest Athletic Conference series victory last week, junior third baseman
Kaleo Johnson has been named the conference's Player of the Week announced on Monday.
Â
"Kaleo had a great weekend for us, and produced in some clutch situations," said MSUB head coach
Aaron Sutton. "It's a testament to his hard work this spring. We know he is excited to continue to do what it takes to help the club win games."
Â
Johnson hit three home runs and went 7-for-16 (.438) to help MSUB to a 3-1 series win at Northwest Nazarene University over the weekend. The junior added a pair of doubles, and posted a slugging percentage of 1.125 in the four game series. Johnson also drew a walk and was hit by a pitch, while striking out zero times and reaching base at a clip of .500.
Â
With MSUB trailing 2-1 in the fifth inning of the series finale, Johnson evened the score with a solo home run to center field and simultaneously helped MSUB break the school record for home runs in a season with the team's 46th of the year. Johnson drove in six runs and scored six times as well, while making all seven of his plays at third base defensively without an error.
Â
Johnson leads the GNAC with a batting average of .402 and a slugging percentage of .747. He is also second in on-base percentage at .495, and has seven home runs with 30 RBIs in 24 starts this season.
Â
This is the seventh GNAC Player of the Week award for MSUB this season, as
Kade Hall,
Jalen Garcia, and
Andrew Schleusner have each also claimed the award and
Steen Fredrickson (twice) and
Sam Wong have won the Pitcher of the Week honor.
Â
The Yellowjackets (22-12, 21-7 GNAC) are in first place in the GNAC and host Concordia University in a four-game series at Dehler Park on Friday and Saturday.
