BILLINGS, Mont. – The Montana Sate Billings women's soccer squad will get its first road test of the season this week as they travel to Colorado Christian and Colorado School of Mines in their final non-conference matches of the year. The Yellowjackets head into the weekend with a 2-0-0 record after defeating Dixie State and the University of Mary a week ago to win the Eighth Annual MSUB Cup.
The Yellowjackets first contest will be on Friday at 1 p.m. against Colorado Christian University. The Jackets are looking to start the season 3-0 for the first time since 2006 when the team opened the year with a 10-0 start.
MSUB is currently being led by senior, Samantha Sandau (Billings, MT), who tallied the game-winning goal against Mary and had a pair of assist during the MSUB Cup, earning MVP honors. Sandau is joined by fellow senior, Kari Foreman (Lakewood, CO), as Foreman has a goal and an assist on the young season to help lead the way.
The Yellowjackets are also seeing production from some its younger players as well. Freshman, Heidi Greenback (Woodinville, WA), has one goal and an assist to start her career at MSUB, while redshirt-freshman, Jennifer Brookshire (Ventura, CA) has also scored a goal.
Defensively, MSUB has gotten solid production from its backline, helping record a shutout against Dixie State in the opener, and allowing just one goal against Mary.
For the goalkeepers, Jordan Fenwick (Boise, ID) is currently 1-0 with a 0.67 goals against average as she's made six saves on the year. Sabrina Grandke-Bawab (Kirkland, WA) earned her first victory of the season in the Mary game, coming on in the second half of the Mary game to earn the victory.
Looking at Colorado Christian, the Cougars enter the matchup with the Jackets at 0-2 on the season. They've dropped matches to Azusa Pacific (0-1) and Biola (0-1) to begin the season. The Yellowjackets will then take on Colorado School of Mines on Sunday, Sept. 12, at 12 p.m. After entering the season as preseason number seven nationally, Mines has gone 0-1-1 to start the season.
The Orediggers are led by Megan Woodworth who has two goals on the year and has six shots on goal. Goalkeeper Briana Schulze has allowed three goals in six that have been on target.
The School of Mines has currently outshot their opponents 42-15 in total shots, while firing 19 on target. Thus far, the Orediggers are averaging 21 shots per contest.
