LAS VEGAS – Finishing as one of four teams with a perfect 5-0 record, California State University San Marcos claimed the title of tournament champion at the sixth annual Desert Stinger Classic hosted by Montana State University Billings, which ran Feb. 13-15 at Majestic Park.

Also finishing with perfect records at the tournament were Cal State Monterey Bay, St. Edward's, and Sonoma State, which finished second-through-fourth, respectively. CSU San Marcos had the most points among undefeated teams (36), and only three points separated the top-three teams as CSU Monterey Bay had 34 and St. Edward's 33.

Sonoma State had 28 points to take fourth, and Lubbock Christian University finished in fifth place as the top 4-1 team with 28 points. Cal Baptist and Central Washington also finished the tournament 4-1.

Leading the way for the Cougars was Naomi Amu, who was named tournament Most Valuable Player after leading all players in home runs (4), RBIs (16) and total bases (24). Amu finished 11-for-16 for a .688 batting average, and she also scored eight runs and drew a pair of walks. Amu had a slugging percentage of 1.500, an on-base percentage of .722 and did not strike out in 18 plate appearances.

On the mound, Katie Wilkinson was also an all-tournament selection for CSUSM, posting a 3-0 record and striking out 11 against two walks with an ERA of 1.29 in 14 innings. Wilkinson appeared in every game for the Cougars, allowing two runs and just six hits, and added a complete game and a save to her impressive line.

From Sonoma State, catcher Taylor Batey, infielder Holli Brown and outfielder Mayleen Mazon each earned all-tournament honors. From CSUMB, pitcher Cori Reinhardt and outfielder Danica Arterburn were all-tournament selections, and for St. Edward's pitcher Katelyn Klug and infielder Alex Mayfield landed on the all-tournament team.

Joining Reinhardt, Klug and Wilkinson on the all-tournament team as pitchers were Michelle Duncan of Dixie State and Courtney McGee of Lubbock Christian. Duncan was the lone player in the tournament to record a sub-1.00 earned run average, as she allowed just one earned run in 17 1/3 innings of work and threw two complete games with an ERA of 0.52. Duncan also struck out 15 batters and walked just two while surrendering 10 hits.

Taylor Hoke was named as an infielder on the all-tournament team after hitting three home runs and batting 9-for-17 (.529). Hoke also made just one error in 20 chances at short.

Other infielders on the all-tournament team were Nicole Nobbe of Cal State San Bernardino, and Jacque Lopez of Cal Baptist.

Outfielders on the all-tournament team were Faith Koria of Lubbock Christian, Alessandra Giannavola of Notre Dame de Namur, and utility player Jenelle Trautmann of Augustana.
