‘Jackets defeat #16 ‘Jacks, advance to championship

SEASIDE, Calif. – After falling in a game earlier today to Sonoma State, MSU Billings rebounded with a 5-2 win over No. 16 Humboldt State at the NCAA west region tournament. The Yellowjackets have set themselves up for a rematch with Sonoma State tomorrow at noon for the NCAA west sub-region championship title.

Jessyka MacDonald (21-7) tossed her 19th complete game for MSUB. The senior pitcher was tough on the mound and backed up by a great defense held Humboldt State (42-19) to five hits.

The Yellowjackets also had five hits in the game, but two went the distance with home runs from Aubrey Conceicao and Kelsey Devlin. Conceicao had another clutch game for MSUB and was 2-3 with three RBI's. Devlin picked up her RBI on a solo shot in the fifth inning.

After stranding 13 base runners against Sonoma, this time the 'Jackets left just two on while Humboldt left seven on base.

The Yellowjackets picked up a run in the second and one in the fifth.

MSUB catcher Brittney Sanders was hit by pitch to open the second inning. On Conceicao' s first at bat for her team, she crushed a line drive over the Humboldt State center fielder's head for a single deep and advanced to third on the bad read while Sanders made her way from first to home scoring the first run of the game for the 'Jackets.

In the fifth inning Devlin smoked her seventh home run of the season, tacking on a run for MSUB putting the Yellowjackets up 2-0.

The No. 16 Lumberjacks responded in the bottom of the inning scoring two runs on three hits. Cyndi Chavez hit a blooper that dropped five feet in front of the shortstop making it on with a single. Hanna Holland advanced Chavez on a sacrifice bunt. Two more singles from Darian Harris and Tiffany Hollingsworth drove in two runs to tie the game at two.

In the sixth inning, it was Conceicao who pulled through again. Cori Gammon singled to third base to place a runner on first and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sanders walked to place two runners on. On a 1-2 count, Conceicao fired a rocket over the center field fence to put the Yellowjackets up by three, 5-2. The winning hit was Conceicao's third home run of the season.

In the circle for Humboldt, Madison Williams (19-8) tossed four complete innings scattering four hits and allowing four earned runs for the loss. Harris was 2-4 for the 'Jacks with a RBI and a run scored.

With the win, Montana State University Billings (31-22) heads to the NCAA west sub-region championship game where the Yellowjackets will face Sonoma State.
